FHC plays a vital role in providing accessible healthcare to the community. Many of our patients are newcomers who face significant challenges, including language barriers, trauma, high inflation, unaffordable housing, limited childcare options, and a lack of familiarity with local systems. Located in central areas within the community, FHC is uniquely positioned with a diverse team of allied health professionals to help patients achieve their goals.

I am proud to be part of an organization that plays a vital role in the community, dedicated to breaking down barriers to access at every stage of care.

For 50 years, FHC has been a leader in community-centred care, and I’m proud to be part of an organization with such a rich history. The centre’s programs are designed to support the diverse populations in the area, from prenatal health and food literacy to mental health support and chronic disease management.

I’ve had the privilege of working with almost every team at FHC, collaborating across this multidisciplinary organization and seeing the dedication of its staff. Each team works tirelessly to provide exceptional care, not only addressing immediate needs but also focusing on improving the overall health and well-being of our community.

Witnessing their hard work has been truly inspiring and has left a lasting impact on both me and the people we serve.

Flemingdon’s success is based on 50 years of engagement as a community health centre. FHC takes a progressive approach in providing harmonized healthcare services and recognizing cultural diversity, while providing equity based and evidence-based care. The goal is to provide state-of-the-art and one-stop health services for the whole community.

As part of FHC, the Community Health Ambassador squad works with residents and organizations to provide wider access to care and other supports in the community.

I am proud to be a member of the Community Health Ambassador team, supporting FHC’s engagement with the community.

I’ve been a patient since 1980, and so have my mother and son. FHC has provided fantastic care.

When I was asked to join the board, I said yes. I saw it as a way of giving back to the community that has taken such good care of me and my family. From a client position, you just see the end result. On the board, you see more clearly the trials and tribulations faced by the people who do this work in the community.

I firmly believe this model of care keeps people away from the emergency room. With community health services like this, from chiropody to mental health to diabetes prevention, everything is handled under the same roof.

As a board member, I look forward to spreading the word about the great work FHC does in the community.

50 years of impact: Stories, news and research

Noel Cruz speaks about his engagement with FHC over 50 years at the April 28 Business Breakfast

Noel’s Journey: Care, Community & Giving Back

When Noel Cruz arrived in Canada in October, 1974, he could never have imagined a single decision would become a cornerstone of his life for the next five decades. A newcomer from the Philippines, he shared a modest apartment with his brother on St. Dennis Drive, paying just $113 a month in rent. Waiting for the bus near the Ontario Science Centre, he took in his new surroundings.

Within a few months, on January 27, 1975, Noel walked into the newly opened Flemingdon Health Centre for his very first appointment. “We used to call it ‘Flemo’ back then,” he recalls with a smile. “It was easier to pronounce!”  It didn’t take long for Flemo to feel like home.

Fifty years later, Noel is still with FHC – still as a client and as a volunteer Board Member. “I’ve lived in five Toronto suburbs since then,” he says. “I never left Flemo because Flemo never left me.”
