In partnership with the City of Toronto, The Neighbourhood Office and Evergreen Brickworks, FHC launched the Gateway Bike Hub project in 2018. Using a collaborative model, the City of Toronto encouraged local communities to undertake bike repairs, reduce waste and promote cycling culture in Toronto. This innovative project trains residents in bicycle assembly, repair, maintenance and safety with the goal of environmental, social, economic and cultural change. The project is being provided to participants free of charge.

Each stage of this project has a robust public engagement component and significant participation of volunteers living in apartment towers. The project promotes a social enterprise model for the Gateway Bike Hub to ensure the program is sustainable. The retail and sales component of the program, including rentals, will help build a revenue model over time, where surpluses will be reinvested back into the Gateway Bike Hub.
